Cathédrale de Notre Dame is an iconic landmark of Paris. This Gothic masterpiece is world-famous for its size, ancient past and fine architecture. It is located on the Ile de la Cité, in the historic centre of Paris. The Île de la Cité  is one of two natural islands on River Seine. It is a short walk from the Palais de Justice and Sainte Chapelle.

During repair work on 15 April 2019, a huge fire broke out and destroyed the spire, clock and central frame of the twelfth century Gothic landmark. Reconstruction work is in full swing and an army of craftsmen gallop towards a deadline to reopen in time for the 2024 Paris Olympics. The fire generated a flood of contributions, with 340,000 donors in 150 countries raising  €844 million in donations, according to the public body overseeing the restoration.

Roman Colosseum – Icon of Roman Empire

Roman Colosseum was an icon of the Roman Empire. The empire included large areas around the Mediterranean Sea in Europe, Northern Africa, and Western Asia. Slaves built the colosseum as a symbol of Roman military might. What struck me at first sight was its vast size. It is an architectural marvel. It must have been quite a place when gladiators and wild animals fought to death. Gladiators were professional combatants in ancient Rome.

Zaanse Schans – Old Windmills in Netherlands

Zaanse Schans is one of the best-loved tourist destinations in Netherlands. Nearly a million people visit the place each year. The village presents a picture of what life was in Netherlands in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. It has old houses, traditional windmills and workshops. There were 600 windmills in the Zaan region in the old days. Now there are ten historic windmills in the typical Dutch wooden architectural style. They date back to the 18th and 19th centuries. Dutch started building windmills as early as 1,200 AD to use them for grinding grains.
