Saint Francis Church Kochi,  a landmark of Fort Kochi, is one of the oldest European churches in India. It dates back to the sixteenth century. The body of Vasco da Gama, the Portuguese navigator, had been buried in the church in 1524.  Da Gama was a Portuguese explorer and navigator, and the first person to sail directly from Europe to India. His son, Padre da Silva de Gama, took the mortal remains to Lisbon in 1538. The gravestone of Vasco da Gama can still be seen in the church. …

Periyar Lake is a reservoir measuring 26 sq km (10 sq mi). Construction of  Mullaperiyar Dam created the reservoir in 1895. Many trees got submerged in the lake. You can still see tree stumps sticking out of the water. Thickly wooded hills of Periyar Tiger Reserve surround the lake. It is 1 km from Kumily in Idukki District of Kerala.

Thirunelli Temple is a famous pilgrim centre in a beautiful jungle valley which has mountains on four sides. Lord Maha Vishnu is the principal deity. In the Maha Vishnu avatar, he is considered to be on the coils of the Snake Adi Shesha (represents cosmic energy) over the Ksheera Sagar (represents Milky Way). The temple is at the base of Brahmagiri hills. It is 30 km from Mananthavady in Kerala, at an altitude of 900 metres.

Idukki Arch Dam in Kerala is Asia’s tallest arch dam and has a height of 168 metres (550 feet). It stands between two granite hills called Kuravanmala (839 metres) and Kurathimala (925 metres). Incidentally a tribal chief named Kolumban had escorted a British explorer to site of Idukki Dam.
